(BEIJING, August 20) -- At an IOC/BOCOG joint press conference held on the morning of August 20, Wang Wei, Executive Vice-President and Secretary General of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG), told the media that China's 110m Hurdles runner Liu Xiang is an outstanding athlete and sponsors will continue to support him as he recovers from his injury.
In response to a question about Liu Xiang, who withdrew from his initial heat on Monday unable to run due to injury, Mr. Wang confirmed that Liu Xiang is an outstanding athlete, who has made a huge contribution in both national and international sporting arenas. His injury is something that he himself and all the Chinese spectators are extremely upset about, he said. They are very regretful that this has happened to him.
"He tried to participate up to the very last minute and it was only when his injury was too severe and the pain was unbearable, so he had to withdraw. We have a great deal of sympathy for him, he also expressed that after he recovered he will continue to compete to recover his past glory," Mr. Wang continued.
As for Liu Xiang's sponsors, Mr Wang said, "I have heard some sponsors said they will continue to support Liu Xiang and encourage him to get better and return to the competition field."
